Revenge of The Sith: First Impressions

I saw ROTS this afternoon and I wanted to jot down some quick first impressions. I’ll talk about it at length on a later date.

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

Things I liked:

  • It’s explicitly stated why Obi-Wan and Yoda are able to transcend death while other Jedi cannot.
  • It was nice to see Chewie, though he did nothing.
  • The purge of the Jedi Temple was foul, as it should be.
  • Obi-Wan’s relationship with Anakin is much better. They seem like friends, in sharp contrast to the way they butted heads in AOTC.
  • The debate over why 3PO doesn’t recognize Obi-Wan, Tatooine or the Skywalker name is put to rest.
  • Obi-Wan has matured from the cold padawan in Episode I to the wise, soulful Obi-Wan of ANH.

Things I didn’t like:

  • Anakin’s reason for going to the Dark Side is flawed.
  • The Obi-Wan vs. Anakin fight was too short.
  • Yoda gave up too easily against the Emperor.
  • Darth Sidious looks silly when his hood is down.
  • Darth Sidious doesn’t seem as powerful or as menacing as he did in ROTJ.
  • No new Force powers were revealed.

"Anakin’s reason for going to the Dark Side is flawed."

Right on. He went so quickly, too!

Yeah, first he's crying over aiding Palpatine in the murder of Mace Windu, then minutes later he's killing babies. And not just any babies -- that little blond kid who came to Anakin for help when the Jedi Temple was overrun knew him personally.

Anakin couldn't possibly have thought that Padme would want him to kill children to save her, so how could he justify his actions?

Makes no sense.

About the no new force powers comment, there have been about 10 force powers used in the films:

Lightning (Palpatine and Tyranus)
Choke (Vader)
Push (Eps 1, 2 and 3 mostly)
Basic telekinetic manipulation (All Jedi)
Speed (Qui-gon, Obi-wan, Sidious)
Jump (Qui-gon, Obi-wan, Anakin)
Mind trick (Obi-wan, Qui-gon)
Saber throw (Tyranus)
Heal (Qui-gon)
Force Sense (All Jedi)
Force ghost (Qui-gon, Obi-wan, Anakin, Yoda)

Is there anything these guys can't do? I can't even think of any more powers that they can use, and I've played all the Jedi Knight series

Who did Qui-Gon heal? I don't recall that.

As for what they can't do, they don't seem to be able to fly. They can briefly levitate, and they can extend a leap, but they can't fly, per se.

I also thought that in the prequel trilogy we might see Jedi combine thier powers for greater effect -- say, join hands and do a Force Push that could blow a hole in a wall, or topple a building.

How cool would that have been!
